WezWez Wellness

Movement and Mindfulness for Every Generation

Bringing holistic wellness, movement, and cultural connection to schools and senior communities in the DMV.

WezWez: Wellness in Motion

WezWez Wellness is our signature movement-for-wellness program designed to foster healing, vitality, and connection. Our sessions go beyond traditional exercise; they provide a restorative space to release emotions held in the body through somatic awareness, intentional breathwork, and rhythmic movement. We meet every participant exactly where they are—honoring their individual pace and their body, using the richness of Ethiopian traditional dance.

What Participants Experience
  • Mind–Body Connection: Practices for grounding, presence, and mental clarity.

  • Regulated Nervous System: Breathwork designed to calm the body and reduce stress.

  • Daily Resilience: Emotion regulation tools that build strength for everyday life.

  • Joy-Activation: Exercises to reconnect with pleasure, play, and vitality.

  • Inclusive Movement: Rhythms rooted in Ethiopian dance, adapted for all bodies and levels.

How It Works

We bring transformative wellness directly to your community with a focus on consistency and ease:

  • Instructor-Led: Sessions are guided by facilitators expert in somatic movement and cultural dance.

  • Weekly Rhythm: Consistent weekly sessions to build routine and lasting impact.

  • Flexible Timing: Sessions range from 30–60 minutes to fit your schedule.

  • Anywhere: Available on-site in select cities or through.

Why Ethiopian Traditional Dance?

Ethiopian dance is more than a cultural expression—it is a sophisticated system of rhythmic movement that naturally aligns with modern somatic wellness.

  • Poly-Rhythmic Grounding: The distinct footwork and rhythms of Ethiopian dance encourage a strong connection to the earth, promoting a sense of physical and emotional grounding.

  • Release of Tension: The signature shoulder and chest movements (Eskista) are uniquely effective at releasing stored tension in the upper body, where many people hold stress and suppressed emotion.

  • Vagal Tone & Breath: The rhythmic pulsations of the dance work in harmony with the breath, helping to stimulate the vagus nerve and improve the body’s ability to move from "stress mode" to "rest and recover."

  • Cognitive Agility: Navigating the intricate rhythms and patterns of the dance provides a "brain workout" that improves coordination, memory, and cognitive focus for both youth and seniors.

  • Collective Joy: Historically, these dances are communal. By practicing them, participants tap into a "collective effervescence" that reduces feelings of isolation and boosts the hormone oxytocin.

Real Impact

"Our students were so focused on learning the dance with the rhythm, and then they naturally started taking deep breaths; they were visibly in a better state after even a short session. It’s incredible to see that shift happen so quickly." — Program Leader, Art Summer Camp

"I’ll be honest, my hip was hurting quite a bit before we started the class. But after just one session of moving to the rhythms and focusing on my breath, I actually felt better. It was fun, so I didn't expect to feel relief!" — Senior WezWez Participant
